Fewer Breakdowns—More Trail Fun
Long derailleurs - High lever forces - Low counterforce
- The UDH derailleur hanger, with a material thickness of just 5 mm, must withstand the stress of long 12-speed derailleurs.
- Even a slight bump against the rear Derailleur in the trunk or on the trail can bend the UDH derailleur hanger.
- Insufficient strength increases the risk of material fatigue and breakdowns
- The Stiffshifter supports the Derailleur and prevents annoying breakdowns and trail interruptions caused by bent or broken UDH derailleur hangers
Plug & play - Installation
- The Stiffshifter is easily installed along with your UDH derailleur hanger
- It integrates seamlessly into existing setups.
- No special parts, no complicated installation

In the event of a fall
In the unlikely event of a serious crash: The Stiffshifter is designed to break before your Frame is damaged.

Why You Need the Stiffshifter
Modern derailleurs are larger, have longer lengths, and exert high forces on the UDH derailleur hanger. However, this component consists of only about 5 mm of aluminum, which must absorb all the forces between the frame, the derailleur, and the drivetrain. This can lead to flex in the system—and it is precisely this flex that affects shifting precision.
The Stiffshifter stiffens the connection between the frame, Derailleur hanger, and Derailleur, significantly reducing these movements. The result: a more stable drivetrain and noticeably more precise shifting, even when the trail gets rough.

Your Benefits
-
Maximum Protection
- The Stiffshifter stabilizes the UDH derailleur hanger from the outside
- Support is provided by the Derailleur
- A pin engages directly with the derailleur’s mounting bolt
- This provides additional support for the derailleur hanger
- This effectively prevents the Derailleur hanger from bending or breaking
-
Easy to install
- Loosen and remove the thru-axle
- Remove the UDH screw
- Insert the Stiffshifter pin into the rear Derailleur screw
- Install the Stiffshifter with the UDH screw and tighten it
- Reinsert the quick-release axle
- Installation complete
-
predetermined breaking point
- Replaceable derailleur hangers were invented as a predetermined breaking point for the Frame
- The frame dropout for an UDH derailleur hanger is 12 mm thick, making it extremely sturdy
- The wall thickness of the Stiffshifter at the mounting point is 1.5 mm
- In the event of a severe impact to the Derailleur or the Stiffshifter, the Stiffshifter breaks to prevent damage to the Frame

LESS UDH DERAILUR HANGER FLEXING
- Modern derailleurs can be subjected to high forces during shifting—especially on E-bikes.
- The Stiffshifter provides support and performs stiffening on the Derailleur hanger for more precise shifting.
Field tests using a dial gauge have shown that the rear derailleur with the Stiffshifter support exhibits significantly less flex than the UDH derailleur hanger alone without support.
- A 0.2 mm deflection—as measured in practice without the Stiffshifter—causes a shift in the derailleur pulley of approximately 1.6 mm.
- That is half the distance between the cassette sprockets.

FAQ
What happens in a crash?
The UDH derailleur hanger is often described as a “predetermined breaking point.” In practice, however, derailleur hangers bend much more frequently, long before they actually break. Even minor contacts with rocks or pressure during transport can be enough to alter their alignment—with noticeable effects on shifting precision.
In the event of a serious crash, the Stiffshifter will break before your frame is damaged. The Stiffshifter has only 1.5 mm of material in the relevant area. The UDH dropout has 18 mm.
In the event of severe crashes or hard impacts, forces continue to act on the entire system—just as they would without the Stiffshifter.
Why does my UDH derailleur hanger keep breaking?
UDH derailleur hangers are made of soft aluminum and are designed to break in the event of a crash to protect the frame.
Problem: Modern derailleurs are so long and exposed that even slight contacts are enough to cause damage.
The Stiffshifter solves this: It provides additional support for the Derailleur and distributes the forces more effectively. The Derailleur hanger now breaks only during truly hard impacts—not anymore from every little rock on the trail.
What should I do if my UDH derailleur hanger is bent?
Short-term: Replace the UDH derailleur hanger (30–50€, often unavailable).
Long-term: Install a Stiffshifter to permanently solve the problem. The Stiffshifter prevents your UDH derailleur hanger from bending in the first place—during every crash, every transport, and every shift.
Advantage: Install it once = permanent protection. No more buying replacement Derailleur hangers, no more having to cut your ride short.
Where is the Stiffshifter manufactured?
Made in Austria! The Stiffshifter is developed and manufactured in Enns, Upper Austria—to the highest quality standards and using local manufacturing.
For which riders is the Stiffshifter ideal?
Ideal for:
🏔️ Enduro and trail riders – maximum protection in the event of a crash
🚴 Bike packers & touring riders – safe transport, no breakdowns on the road
🏁 Racers – more precise shifting under load
🚗 Frequent transporters – protection in the trunk, on the bike rack
💪 Heavy riders – greater stability under heavy loads
In short: For anyone who wants to protect their UDH derailleur hanger and shift more precisely.
Is there a warranty?
Yes! The Stiffshifter comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you're not satisfied, you can send it back—no questions asked. Plus: a 2-year manufacturer's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
Can I install the Stiffshifter myself?
Yes, absolutely! Installation is easy and requires only standard tools (Allen wrenches). If you can replace your thru-axle yourself, you can also install the Stiffshifter.
How do I install the Stiffshifter?
Installation takes just 2 minutes:
1. Loosen and remove
the thru-axle 2. Remove
the UDH screw 3. Insert
the Stiffshifter pin into the rear derailleur bolt 4. Reinsert the UDH screw and tighten it
5. Reinsert
the thru-axle 6. **Done!**
Is the Stiffshifter better than a stiffer derailleur hanger (e.g., Silca UDH)?
The Stiffshifter and stiffer Derailleur hanger complement each other perfectly. A stiffer Derailleur hanger reduces flex in the material, while the Stiffshifter provides additional mechanical support during crashes and transport—regardless of the Derailleur hanger material.
How heavy is the Stiffshifter?
The Stiffshifter weighs only about 17.3 grams—barely noticeable, but highly effective.
Does the Stiffshifter also prevent flex when shifting?
Yes! The support provided by the mounting bolt stabilizes the derailleur, reducing its tendency to shift sideways when shifting under load. The result: more precise shifting, especially uphill or under heavy load.
Why does my UDH derailleur hanger bend so easily?
UDH derailleur hanger are made of aluminum that is only 5 mm thick and are standardized for maximum compatibility. However, modern derailleurs are significantly longer and heavier than they used to be—the UDH derailleur hanger does not provide enough support. During transport, crashes, or aggressive shifting, it can bend or break. The Stiffshifter provides additional support for the derailleur at the mounting bolt, thereby preventing bending.
Does the Stiffshifter also provide protection during transport?
Yes! The Stiffshifter provides lasting protection for your rear Derailleur—not just while riding, but also when transporting your bike in a car, on a plane, or on a bike rack. Once installed, your Derailleur hanger is permanently protected.
